Psychological Therapy and Intervention

About Psychological Therapy and Intervention

Psychological intervention (also referred to as “treatment”) can include psychological therapies or other interventions such as family work and consultation and is carefully tailored to address the underlying patterns behind any difficulties, and support recovery.

What psychological therapies and interventions might be offered?

As a Clinical Psychologist with extensive experience working with children, adolescents and adults, I can offer a range of approaches for individuals and families including:

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing) Therapy

An evidence-based therapy most widely-used to treat psychological trauma, which uses bi-lateral stimulation amongst other techniques to help the brain and nervous system deal healthily with disturbing memories.  Read more about EMDR.

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

A well-established, evidence-based therapeutic approach which treats a wide range of psychological difficulties by working with the links between what we think, how we feel and how we behave. Read more about CBT.

Compassion-Focused practices

Amongst the “Third Wave CBT” approaches, Compassion-Focused practices foster mindsets to increase our sense of compassion for ourselves, for others and from others. Read more about Compassion-Focused Therapy.

Eco-psychological (nature-based) approaches

Nature-based practices that can be integrated alongside other therapeutic methods to enhance our wellbeing and support our steps in therapy. Read more about Eco-psychology.

Family work

Sessions with more than one family member to support healthy family functioning and shared coping with difficulties – especially when a child in the family is struggling. Read more about Family work.

Parent and carer consultations

Meetings for one or more parent/s or carer/s to discuss concerns, explore dilemmas, build parenting confidence, and find effective strategies to support your child or young person. Read more about Parent and carer consultations.

How do I choose the right Psychological Therapy?

Most Clinical Psychologists – myself included – are “Formulation-Led”. This means that rather than getting an “off the shelf” treatment for a specific problem, the comprehensive understanding of your/your child’s needs gained during Assessment & Formulation informs a carefully-tailored range of options and recommendations for therapy and intervention/treatment.

When we discuss the options, I will talk with you both about the scientific evidence-base about what tends to work for whom, and what I think is most likely to work best for your specific circumstances and concerns.
